Educational Module: Safe Injection Practice
Learn the importance of safe injections practices to provide injections in a safe manner which protects the patient, healthcare worker, and others. In this presentation, elements of aseptic technique relating to injection practices are reviewed. Simulated experiences depict the key differences between multi-dose and single-dose vials.
At the end of this Skill Station, participants will be able to:
- Review the basics of safe injection practices and their application to healthcare
- Review elements of aseptic technique relevant to injection practices
- Identify key differences between multi‐dose and single‐dose vials.
- Apply knowledge in practice to minimize risks and behaviors associated with unsafe injection practices

Preparing a medication from a vial must be done with care. This video demonstrates unsafe and improper injection practices while drawing up medication from a multi-dose vial. See if you can spot the errors.

When drawing up medications from vials, safe injection practices are crucial. Many outbreaks in history have occurred from reusing syringes and needles. See the contamination that occurs when a syringe is reused. A syringe and needle should only be single use and only used on one single person.
Safe Injection Practice Still Image Series
This series shows the importance of cleaning and disinfecting a surface prior to preparing medications, hand hygiene, cleaning the rubber stopper with alcohol, and careful handling of needle and syringe. Additional still photos provide insight on processes of recapping needles.
