Course Description:

This public safety-specific educational program addresses all requirements for the Designated Infection Control Officer role across public safety settings. This course is purposefully designed for fire, emergency medical services, law enforcement, coroners/medical examiners, and other public safety personnel to address the complex needs of infection prevention and control, as well as occupational health management. This program exceeds all training requirements as required by the federal Ryan White Act and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration Bloodborne Pathogens standard. Participants will also be exposed to the core content covered on the Designated Infection Control Officer national board certification.

Course Director Bio:

Dr. Hudson Garrett is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Louisville School of Medicine and a Professor of Emergency Medical Services and Critical Care in the College of Allied Health at Phoenix Institute and College. He holds a Graduate Certificate in Infection Prevention and Infection Control and completed epidemiology training coursework thru the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins Fellows Program in Hospital Epidemiology and Infection Control. Dr. Garrett serves as the Public Safety Liaison for the Greater Atlanta Chapter of the Association of Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology and also is a consultant Tactical Medic for several police departments.  He has over 15 years of experience as an EMS and Medical Instructor. He has served on many national professional boards and received a Presidential Citation Award from the Society for Critical Care Medicine in recognition for his work in preventing healthcare associated infections. He was inducted as a Distinguished Fellow and Practitioner in the National Academies of Practice. He is Board Certified in Vascular Access, Healthcare Quality, Critical Care, Long Term Care, Infection Prevention and Control, Emergency Medical Services, and Patient Safety. 

Dr. Garrett is an instructor with the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians, American Safety and Health Institute, National Safety Council, Neurocritical Care Medicine Society, and for other professional groups in the public safety sector. He is also a member of the COVID-19 Response Team with the Federal Emergency Management Services/Health and Human Services Medical Reserve Corps and regularly cares for high-risk infectious diseases patients thru his work in the prehospital emergency medical setting. Dr. Garrett holds additional certifications including:
